Flagship Glass Pavilion on Reconstructed Basement Store
PCE was responsible for the design of major basement and plaza reconstruction works required for the feature glass entrance pavilion at this unique Apple store. Nine structural bays in the upper basement and plaza with a footprint of around 625m2 were demolished and reconstructed so that the new structure could accommodate the pavilion requirements, upgraded plaza and basement headroom requirements. Special attention was needed for cast-in support structures due to the tight tolerances of the drum glass stair and cantilevered glass pavilion panels. A special feature of this design is the eight full-height rotating door sets that open during store hours providing an apparent structure-free enclosure to support to the carbon fibre reinforced plastic roof. This project won the 2017 Engineering New-Record Best Global Project in the retail/mixed-use development category.
